Biggest tank, longest range: Super Soaker by the numbers

Super Soaker by the numbers: two numbers decide most water fights: how much water you carry and how far you can throw it. Here is how our current Super Soaker water blasters compare on tank size and range, and what those numbers mean in a real backyard.

Largest water tanks

Super Soaker Barrage
The Barrage, an example of this section.

Among Super Soaker water guns, Barrage leads with an 84 oz reservoir — enough for a very long round. Zombie Strike Ripstorm follows at 50 oz, then Twister at 37 oz and the Mega Dunk-Fill at 33.9 oz, which refills in a second anyway. Flip Fill and Wave Spray each hold 30 oz.

Remember that water is heavy: a liter weighs about two pounds. Big tanks suit teens and adults; younger kids are usually happier with 10 to 20 oz and more trips to the bucket.

Longest range

Super Soaker FreezeFire 2.0
The FreezeFire 2.0, an example of this section.

Several hand-pumped blasters reach up to 38 feet: Barrage in distance mode, FreezeFire 2.0, Rebelle Cascade and the Chewbacca Bowcaster. Squall Surge reaches 35 feet and Microburst 2 manages 33 feet from a compact body. The Storm Ball Wrist Rocket throws its soaked foam balls more than 33 feet.

Range figures are measured in still air with a full tank and smooth, full pump strokes. Wind, a half-empty tank or short strokes will shorten them.

Most powerful blast

Super Soaker Power Drench XL
The Power Drench XL, an example of this section.

Power is about how much water arrives at once, not only how far it travels. The Power Drench XL, filled and pressurized by the garden hose, can release its whole tank in a single flood. Plunger blasters such as Rainstorm and Rainstorm Riot also dump their entire chamber in one push, which feels enormous at close range.

For continuous power, the air-pressure XP100 and XP50-AP keep a steady stream going as long as the chamber holds pressure.

Fastest refill

Super Soaker Mega Dunk-Fill
The Mega Dunk-Fill, an example of this section.

Dunk-Fill blasters refill in about a second through a self-sealing valve. Plunger blasters reload from the pool with one stroke. Hose blasters and pool floats with pool-fed blasters never need refilling at all.

Why Super Soaker range numbers differ

The range printed on a Super Soaker box is measured in calm conditions with a full tank. A pump blaster loses some distance as the tank empties; an air-pressure blaster loses distance as the pressure in its chamber drops. Hose blasters depend on the pressure from your tap, which is why Power Drench lists a minimum psi.

Classic water guns vs. today's Super Soaker

In the past, the most powerful Super Soaker water guns used large pressure chambers and very high pressure. Today's lineup balances power with safe play: every pressurized model has a relief valve, and the hose-powered Power Drench XL delivers its flood without anyone over-pumping. The fun is the same; the system is smarter.

How to get the most from any tank

Fill the tank fully, close the cap firmly, and pump with long, smooth strokes. Aim slightly upward for distance. Refill before the tank is completely empty so the pump never draws air. These small habits add feet of range and seconds of play to any Super Soaker.

Hasbro's Super Soaker series, then and now

Hasbro has kept the Super Soaker series alive through many generations of water guns, from the huge classic tanks of the nineties to today's Dunk-Fill and Power Drench water blasters. The numbers on the box tell the story: tanks got smarter rather than just bigger, refills got faster, and range stayed where it matters, around 30 to 38 feet for the best hand-pumped models.

Trigger, pump or pressure: which shoots farthest?

Trigger water guns are the simplest and shortest-range; they are made for small hands and close games. Pump water guns shoot farther because every stroke pushes water hard through the nozzle. Pressure water blasters store energy before you shoot and keep a steady stream going without extra effort. None of them are motorized, and none of them need a dart: just water, a hot summer day and someone to soak.

Streams of water and spread

Range is not everything. Twin Tide sends two streams of water at once, Scatter Blast fans water out across a group, and Barrage switches between scatter, flood and distance. A wide spread is easier to hit with, a narrow stream goes farther. The most fun Super Soaker setup mixes both on the same team.

Putting the numbers together

For a big backyard battle, pair a large tank with a fast refill: Barrage for the long game and a Dunk-Fill for quick returns. For the pool, choose plungers or a float. For the most powerful single hit, nothing in the current lineup beats Power Drench XL.
